When I left high school, I was sure of a long career as a Shorthand-Typist. I had done my time behind a typewriter (later computers), and transcribed many pages of Teeline shorthand. Followed by over twenty years working in administration, community relations, and communications.
The road to my current career has been a steep learning curve. First, with a focus on heritage research and writing in 2018. Before deciding that content writing would be my new gig. This blog spills the beans on what a content writer does and how it differs from a copywriter. What qualities to look for, and how we can team up to make your content sing.
The art of content writing
Now, let’s talk about the art of content writing. Imagine a content writer as someone who paints a vivid picture with their words. The goal? To educate, entertain, and inspire. We’re here to provide value. It keeps you hooked on helpful information, interesting topics, or entertainment.
A question I often get asked is what the difference is between a content writer and a copywriter. I recently found an excellent definition by Neil Patel.
“The main difference between copywriting and content writing is the purpose of the content. Copywriting is written to persuade or sell, while content writing educates or builds relationships.”
Content writing, in its simplest form, is to convince someone of your argument. If I write a blog, I aim not to sell a company’s product. No one wants to read sales content. What I will do is sell the idea that the reader needs the type of product or service I’m talking about. It’s more about being there for the longer term. Content informs to sell later. This is compared to copy, which sells driven action while being memorable.
Types of content writing include:
- Articles (online, print)
- Blogs
- Press Releases
- Case studies/white papers
- Ebooks
- Infographics
- Newsletters (email, print)
- Podcasts
- Value-driven social media posts
- Websites
What to look for in a Content Writer
Content writers come in many styles and expertise. But they can be adaptable as well. If you want to establish a brand personality and build customer relationships. You will need someone who:
- writes in your brand’s voice
- has industry expertise
- can research information
- creates content that is crisp and to the point
- edits content to make sure it is concise
- uses their skills to write different content
What to expect from me as your Content Writer
When working with me as your content writer, communication is key. Consulting early ensures alignment on the type of content, goals, and connection.
The process can be as simple as:
- We define your target audience.
- I draft a template for each type of content you want (eg, blog posts, website copy, newsletters, etc.)
- Utilise information from your website or other internal and external sources
- Together, we build a schedule of topics to release
As your content writer, I then work on crafting your content. As simple as that.
